The 1824 courthouse was originally contracted to Charles Paxton and others for $7860 on 4/20/1820. Paxton could not complete the job for the bid price and abandoned the work. No immediate effort to continue construction occurred. so a threat was made to move the County Seat, most likely to Greenville. An additional $3256.50 was raised through subscription and the courthouse became usable in November 1824 although not fully completed until 1827.

The four original columns from the 1867 structure adorn the present courtyard although they have been reduced.

Seth Woodruff's local tavern was used for all government business 1817-1824.
