All of Blackford County was originally part of Jay County.
There appears to have been a county seat battle between Hartford and the town of Montpelier. A log courthouse was ordered but never built in 1841, and it is not clear whether this structure was to have been built in Montpelier or Hartford.
Hartford was changed to Hartford City in 1841.
The 1894 Courthouse was designed by Labelle & French who also designed the 1894 White County Courthouse.
Remodeling has destroyed much of the interior of the 1894 Courthouse. Elevator 1965 - Redecorated 1980.
Completion date of the first courthouses has been documented as 1843, 1845, & 1847.
The courthouse square contains both Civil War and World War I Memorials.
