The first county court was held at the houses of John Dunn in March, 1819.
The 1825 Courthouse was modified several times to affect both size and appearance which at times included external office buildings. The cupola was added in 1837 to make the building appear more like the Courthouse in Morgan County that was completed in 1836.
The courthouse contains lawn contains "The Spirit of the American Doughboy" Monument WW-I, and an Owen County War Memorial listing county dead from WWI through the Vietnam War.
