Marion served as a temporary County Seat and courts met there at the house of David Fisher, the first being on July 1, 1922. In Shelbyville, early courts were held at the houses of Benjamin Williams and Hiram Alldredge.
A courthouse to be of wood frame and 20x32 in dimension was proposed by the commissioners in 1823, but it was never built.
The 1937 Courthouse is one of 3 Indiana Art Deco Courthouses built with WPA assistance in the 1930's. They are located in Howard, Fountain, and Shelby Counties.
The Civil War Monument was dedicated in 1931.
