Steuben County is one of a handful of Indiana Counties that did not get caught up in the great courthouse building craze.
The 1869 courthouse is very similar to the 1864 Dekalb and 1858 Huntington Courthouses except for the tower entrances. They all had different builders.
When the 1937 addition on the 1869 courthouse was constructed a third floor was added to the original structure by utilizing the very high second floor ceiling. The entire second floor was originally a single courtroom. This type of modification also occurred in Randolph and Decatur and perhaps in a couple of other Indiana Counties.
The Soldiers Monument in the circle in front of the courthouse was dedicated in 1917.
