The tower collapsed on the 1891 courthouse almost immediately upon completion and was rebuilt. There is an unconfirmed report that the present tower is not in the original location but this is questionable.
A fire in 1903 has been documented, but no reliable accounting has been located.
There are two Civil War cannons on the courthouse grounds.
