Documentation exists that the 1868 courthouse is a rebuild of the 1831 courthouse. This is doubtful.
J.B Bayard designed the 1924 Courthouse as well as the present Courthouse in Sullivan County.
Newport is a very small town, so when the Courthouse burned in 1923, the town of Clinton attempted to wrest the County seat. A compromise was reached where Clinton got a new hospital and Newport kept the county seat and thus the new Courthouse.
