Cass County did not have a Courthouse 1828-1941. There was an office for the Clerk and Recorder built in 1833, but court was held in local churches.
The 1844 courthouse was built with cut stone. This was probably the first use of cut stone in an Indiana courthouse. The stone presumably came from the Georgetown quarry west of Logansport that supplied the Wabash and Erie Canal with stone for locks.
When the 1888 Courthouse was built, the local judge and attorneys convinced the Commissioners to keep the 1844 Courthouse because the Courtroom had outstanding acoustics. Because the 1888 Courthouse was built in front of the 1844 Courthouse, it provided no setback from the street. The tower was modified in 1953. Had this Building not been replaced in 1976 it would be the oldest in the state (1844); Ohio County's was built in 1845. It was the last courthouse torn down in Indiana (as of 2010).
The present courthouse includes a Clock Tower Veterans Memorial. Logansport also has a 'Doughboy' memorial, but it is not on the square.
