There was a small office building erected and utilized 1845-1851.
The construction of the 1851 courthouse was prolonged for three years because of low county treasury and a cholera outbreak potentially brought to Monticello from Lafayette by the builder George Brown.
Labelle & French who also designed the present Blackford County Courthouse designed the 1895 Courthouse.
The first courthouse was destroyed by wind before it was completed and had to be rebuilt. The two wind damaged courthouses in White County are the only two with such damage documented in Indiana.
