Clan Irwin Family History Collection
Ten years before he became King of Scotland, Robert the Bruce hid from King Edward I of England at Bonshaw Castle.
Robert later gifted his Armour Bearer, William de Irvine, Drum Castle and named him the 1st Laird of Drum. One of William's descendants, Edward Irvine
(m. Frances Francis), was the first of the Bonshaw line to migrate to the United States. Edward and his family left Ulster around 1740 and settled in Augusta, Virginia.
Alexander Irvine, the 10th Laird of Drum, was the progenitor of the Drum line. Alexander's great-grandson, Robert Irvine (m. Margaret Wylie), had ten children.
Robert's two daughters and eldest son stayed in Ireland, while the seven youngest sons sailed on the ship "George and Anne" to Philadelphia in 1729.
Clan Irwin can trace their roots back to famous figures, such as Daniel Boone, Sam Houston, Washington Irving, and President Benjamin Harrison.
We are grateful to the Clan Irwin Association, and in particular for the leadership of Guy Irvin during his tenure in various roles in the Association, for helping
to increase the depth and breadth of our holdings on the Irwin family. We are also grateful to Ball State University intern Melody Seberger for her dedicated work in arranging, describing, and scanning these materials for presentation on this website in the fall semester of 2020.
