Index to Livestock Marks Registered In Hendricks County, Indiana (1824-1848)
Transcribed by Meredith Thompson, 2009.
This is an index to a book of "stock marks" that was kept at the courthouse in Hendricks County, Indiana. The book was used to record what marks farmers used on their livestock to indicate ownership. If the livestock was later found by someone (an event known as an "estray"), the marks on the animal could then be used to try and determine who the animal rightfully belonged to. The registrations in this book are scattered, but date from 1824 to 1848.
