Gravel Lawn Cemetery, Madison County, Indiana
Over 5,400 individuals make up the internments of the Gravel Lawn Cemetery detailed here. In addition, family information from scattered obituaries at the Fortville-Vernon Township Public Library as well as from personal genealogical research on the Fort and McCord families supplements the cemetery data. The list was obtained from Gravel Lawn's database provided by Sue Rhoads, the business manager of the cemetery. All typed records were double and triple checked for typing errors and other mistakes. Sometimes the obituaries and cemetery information did not coincide, so inferences had to be made. However, it may appear that there are typing errors, but all information was correctly typed from either the obituary or the cemetery list itself.
The Gravel Lawn Cemetery has a Fortville address but is located in Madison County: PO Box 35, 9088 W. 1025 S., Fortville, IN 46040. It is the main cemetery for Fortville and some McCordsville residents along with old farming families in Hamilton & Madison Counties. "On September 28, 1915, Charles Hiday sold seven acres situated on his farm north of Fortville in Madison County to a Board of Directors for the purpose of developing the Gravel Lawn Cemetery. A chapel was constructed and dedicated on October 15, 2006." (from the Gravel Lawn advertising flyer).
The data is made available here through the kind generosity of Rebecca Crowe and the Fortville-Vernon Township Public Library. It is used here with permission.
